Blackcurrant Leaf: What Is It?

A neglected child?

In the early years of Synofit when we only had Synofit Premium Plus Liquid, the leaf of the Blackcurrant (Ribes nigrum) was not strongly emphasised. After all, the most striking and unique ingredients of this product were GLMax® liquid Green-lipped mussel and Bio-CM100® Bio-Curcumin. Yet it did also contain blackcurrant leaf.

Later, Turmerosaccharides and Boswellia (the latter only in Synofit Premium Plus Liquid) were added to the formula. Therefore, Blackcurrant leaf has always been a core ingredient in the successful Synofit Premium Plus formula.

About the plant Ribes Nigrum

The Blackcurrant, like the Currant (Ribes rubrum), is a member of the Ribes family. The Latin name of the Blackcurrant plant is Ribes nigrum , where ‘nigrum’ refers to the dark colour and ‘ribes’ to the berries. The plant is found in the wild in large parts of Europe (including the Netherlands) and Asia. You can also buy a shrub in many garden centres, which can do well in soil, peat, loam, clay or sand. The berries are widely used for making Cassis. All kinds of interesting health benefits are attributed to the berries, the seeds in the berries, the leaves and even the young flower buds. In Synofit Premium Plus the leaf of the plant in used. Blackcurrant leaf has also been processed in the Synofit Joint Gel (for external use). The use of Blackcurrant leaf has been around for centuries.

For joint function

The fact that Blackcurrant leaf has a nurturing effect on joints is an Article 13 Claim of the EFSA that can also be found on our packaging. If you want to know more about how Blackcurrant leaf is good for joints, then there is plenty of information out there explaining its benefits, you can just give it a quick google. At Synofit we are passionate believers in its helpful properties which is why it is such a key ingredient in our products.

Quality and organic

Synofit also opts for quality with regard to Blackcurrant leaves. In contrast to Green-lipped mussel, which is used in its entirety, an extract of the Blackcurrant leaf is used. This is a 1:10 extract, which means that the active substances of 10x as much leaf has been used (for example, per daily dose of 10 ml, Synofit Premium Plus Liquid contains 167 mg leaf extract, which comes from 1670 mg leaf). For example, the most important substances in question, the so-called proanthocyanidins (PACs), are present in extra concentrated form. We only use organic Blackcurrant.

Cheap imitation products with Blackcurrant leaf, Green-lipped mussel and Curcumin

More and more (web) stores are offering products that also contain Blackcurrant leaf, Green-lipped mussel and Curcumin. These are actually imitations of Synofit Premium Plus. These (sometimes liquid) products often have an attractive selling price but are lower quality, which translates into a different user experience. It is important to be well informed about the actual substantive (quality) differences before you may be tempted by such a cheap product. It is our advice to always look very carefully at the ingredient declaration. For example, are additives used that do not belong in a natural product? Are there ingredients whose quality is not clearly defined?
